Now SSG knows her limits.
And where she would LOVE to have her whole kitchen (not to mention her whole house) painted a lovely color, she knew that there would be NO WAY in H-E- Double Hockey Sticks that she would ever undertake such a monstrous task on her own.
The one way she was able to convince herself to do this makeover was that it would be EASY. And not overwhelming.
And paint overwhelms SSG.
Probably because when she lived in San Diego, she had a terrible little apartment in the ‘hood that she rented for like $400 a month. She tried to brighten it up by panting the walls that awesome Restoration Hardware sage green color that is on the store walls.
Only in their stores they have great lighting and gorgeous sparkling white trim and crown molding.
And um, SSG’s ghetto apartment had none of those things. But it did have a few alcoholics and babies from multiple baby daddies!
So what looked like beautiful, calming, clean green in the store looked like drab, mint, depressing green in SSG’s former apartment.
And SSG can HEAR you right now internets.
But it’s paint! Get a different color! Ohmahgah that’s like the easiest thing ever to change!
And SSG did change it.
She brightened it up by painting the whole place again.
Yellow.
And what looked bright and cheery in photos and the store looked like washed out, dreary, depressing yellow in SSG’s dreary and depressing apartment.
And so SSG gave up … paint AND her deposit when the landlord charged her for having to repaint once SSG finally figured out it was the apartment and neighborhood that were depressing and dreary and moved out.
Anyhoo!
In a flurry of activity the first Christmas after SSG moved into her current place, a little rowhouse that is neither depressing nor dreary in the slightest, she bought two cans of Restoration Hardware paint. That have been sitting in her garage.
For almost five years.
And SSG decided in her “use up what I’ve got first” mode that the “Latte” paint would make a great addition to her kitchen.
On one wall.
SSG figured she could handle painting that.
And guess what, internets?
SHE DID!

The curtains were from that same drab and dreary little San Diego apartment. SSG likes them, but white curtains on a white wall ... meh. She'll be looking for some colAH this weekend.
Total makeover cost to date? $3 … and maybe a little extra in soap and shampoo to get paint off SSG.

LOVE it. I am about to paint my living room this tan sort of latte color. I painted the kitchen in my last apartment red. WHAT WAS I THINKING? I had to paint about 10 coats of white to get my deposit back. Ick. I think it's why I've been paint shy since moving into our house- even though we own it.
Curtains are adorable. Have you thought of stenciling something on them or perhaps dye?
That warmed it right up!!! What a contrast from before to after. I am looking forward to seeing more.
Beautiful! And the shelves and dishes really pop against it!
Cafe curtains are always useful, if you don't decide to dye them the color you want you can just save them and you'll end up using them somewhere eventually.
Great job!
Bella Della I should somehow send you the rest of my paint. I still have over a gallon of the stuff. But WHO KNOWS--this new SSG who has taken me over may paint something else.
Spit - Oh there is MORE sister, just you wait. We're just getting started!
Krissa - THANK YOU! Yeah, I kind of like the cafe curtains and that they block the driveway and any crazy people who are stalking me from outside. We'll see what I find ... they MAY stay ... you've made them grow on me a little.
Okay, I totally feel like a stalker. I LOVE your blog from afar (long time reader, first time poster). But on this I must comment. I am a theater lighting designer and so I feel obligated. Have you ever tried using full spectrum light bulbs (the Reveal Lamps from GE are great) or better yet, the Pink Pastel light bulbs? They will change your life and make everything look prettier...
It looks SO good!!! Can't wait to see it in person! And I think the curtains are cute...
HTG! Thanks for stepping out into the spotlight. Haha, did you see what SSG just did there? She made a lighting joke because you're a lighting person and ... okay ... Thanks so much for reading and your suggestion! It's a GREAT one and no, SSG didn't know either of those things existed and will definitely check them out!
Jen--get yo caboose down here! I'm starting in on the dining room and living room next. On second thought, maybe I should do something about that guest room ...
