SSG's Budget Kitchen Makeover Part 1

SSG seems to get a mad burst of nesting energy that settles in every spring and fall ... but that oddly goes into hibernation in summer and winter.

Coming out of summer, her kitchen was driving her CRAZY.

SSG uses her kitchen. A LOT. Those $40 worth of groceries don't cook themselves, you know.

The Savvy Kitchen has very little storage. It's big but the light hanging from the ceiling is in an awkward spot for a table and there is a lot of space that just doesn't get used. And not very much counter space TO use.

So SSG started stacking.

But SSG gets VERY annoyed at piles of stuff and clutter.

So SSG made a deal with herself. The month of September? Totally devoted to a kitchen makeover. That way at least one room would be finished ... ish ... before she started tackling another one. Fall only lasts for a few months you know ...

The weekends would be spent as follows:

Weekend #1 - Spend NO MONEY.
Weekend #2 - Use an old Target gift card that has been burning a hole in SSG's pocket. The caveat? She could only buy items that would help organize she could NOT just buy more stuff. Even those cute kitchen towels, ohmahgah.
Weekend #3 - Paint and arrange furniture pieces.
Weekend #4 - Buy only the accessories that will really make an impact. Not a lot of little stuff. Only big statement pieces. And try and keep it under $100. And then perform another miracle while she's at it.

So the first weekend SSG did what all of those home make over shows do.
She took everything out of the room.

And started rearranging stuff, even bringing in the table from the deck.

And then SSG CLEANED like a mad woman ... and closed her eyes any time she walked past the piles of the stuff from the kitchen that are now located in the dining room.

Until October.

When THAT room will get a makeover.

Up tomorrow--finding a space for all that S-T-U-F-F.

How timely!

Maybe what you need to do is think about shelves for the wall as well :) A lot of wasted space up there.

You can also get cupboards/doors or even a fabric curtain over top if you want to just shut that visual clutter out of your life.

That looks awesome! What do you think about recovering the cookbooks with either fabric or wallpaper scraps to make them all match and look nice on the shelves? Wallpaper stores and home improvement stores frequently give away or sell for very cheap, old wallpaper sample books. And you can get fabric remnants for next to nothing as well.
Just a thought. It's looking great!

I like the three bookcases together and how it looks like a buffet. Very cute. What will she come up with next?
